When tech companies launch child-accessible tools, the strongest protections should exist before settings menus do.

That means default limits such as:

  • Different behavior models for minors
  • Refusal systems tuned for vulnerable users
  • Reduced memory and data retention for teen accounts
  • Escalation prompts directing users to trusted adults or professionals
  • Friction for obsessive or dependency-like use

Instead, many platforms historically launch broad access, watch how people use it, then retrofit controls when headlines arrive.

We have seen this movie before with social media. Notifications, endless feeds, and weak teen protections were normalized first. Regulation and safety features followed years later.

AI risks are different, but the sequence feels familiar.

A search engine gives links. A chatbot gives presence.

That distinction matters more than most adults realize.

Children and teens may form attachments faster because the system responds instantly, remembers details, and never seems annoyed. For lonely users, that can feel powerful. For struggling users, it can feel essential.
